The minimum wage for over-25s in the UK rose to £8.21 per
hour in April, but Side by Side Care has rewarded our dedicated staff by
boosting the hourly rate to £10 per hour.
We support people who want to live in their own homes around
Crewe and Nantwich. Attracting the right caregivers is never easy, and for
those providing the care it can be a satisfying but challenging career. We hope
to make it even more rewarding.
The National Minimum Wage Act (1998) set out to protect lower
paid workers who often did not have union representation. Side by Side Care has
decided to go above and beyond this minimum.
Neil Smith, Director at Side by Side Care, said: “Recruiting
the right staff has always been tough, and when you are competing with other
industries who offer the same pay it’s hard to retain the people who can make a
real difference to the service you offer.
“Although it adds considerably to the wage bill, we’re
sending out a message that caregivers deserve to be recognised for the amazing
work they do across the Crewe and Nantwich communities.”
Caregivers support people who need companionship, personal
care, rehabilitation support and specialist dementia and Alzheimer’s care. Our caregivers also support with housework and
Lesley Crowe, Registered Manager at Side by Side Care, wants
to see the care sector lead the way. She said: “Providing great care to people who
live at home can make a huge difference to the quality of their lives.
“We have always paid more than the minimum but we decided
that caregivers should be further rewarded for the support they give to others.
“Because people need help at different times of the day and
night, the hours worked by caregivers can be unsocial. So it’s not an easy role
“We hope that by raising the hourly rate well above the
minimum wage we will help to highlight the value that our caregivers give to
people who need regular care to enable them to live independently.”
