This month sees International Women’s Day celebrated around the world. Side by Side Care doesn’t have a problem recruiting excellent ladies, but we never stand still. We still push for equality across the board, and always look to empower those women we employ…
The role of women has changed considerably over recent decades. At work, in the home, across sports, charities and in positions of power – like government. The Prime Minister is a woman, the leader of Cheshire East Council is a woman, and the Mayor of Nantwich is a woman.
International Women’s Day acknowledges the great strides taken, the amazing achievements of numerous notable women, but it also demands more. The movement calls for ongoing action to work towards gender parity no matter who you are, where you are. That’s how things should be.
Side by Side Care staff are, as is often the case in “care” settings, dominated by women. We don’t have a problem recruiting women. Interestingly, the office manager is a man, Matt. That’s down to qualifications and experience, plus the fact that, as a business, we always thought he was the right person for the role.
However, that doesn’t mean that things cannot change. As an organisation, we have looked hard at ways of increasing responsibilities, offering learning opportunities and engaging staff in training. That means people are always improving, always pushing forward. Our women are at the heart of that improvement process.
Leading up to International Women’s Day, social media will be abuzz with hashtags like #PressforProgress, #HereWeAre and #IWD2018. Embrace them. Use them. Help to push for a fairer society where gender is no longer a barrier to anything in our lives.
In our work setting, the office in Nantwich, we have been recruiting more and more care givers to support people around the South Cheshire communities. That means new roles becoming available, promotions, opportunities to lead and manage.
What we can ensure is that women apply for these roles on an equal footing to men. It’s about attracting the very best staff, regardless of gender.
People at Side by Side Care are paid the same when they perform the same role, whether they are male or female. Again, that’s how it should be.
At Side by Side Care, we’re delighted to be joining celebrations around the world to mark International Women’s Day. We come in all shapes and sizes, a range of ages and from many different backgrounds. None of that matters.
What we are is a dedicated workforce (mainly women) who constantly look at ways of improving what we offer. Long may that continue.
Always together, always side by side…
