Getting around the bathroom can be hazardous for anyone, but for the elderly and people with restricted movement it can be a real challenge. A few simple changes and a good care plan can make all the difference.
Who hasn’t slipped in the shower, or struggled getting out of the bath? We’ve all done it, but hopefully avoided too many bumps and scrapes.
It’s a challenging room in any household – no matter what your age or ability. Steamy windows, hot water, hard surfaces, and wet and sometimes slippy floors. It’s no surprise that accidents happen.
And getting on and off the toilet also brings many challenges.
Imagine if you struggled with mobility, or you had a disability? Although many useful devices and gadgets can make life easier, they are not always available, working properly or in the right positions.
Regular moving and handling training
Sometimes, users or people who give care and support have not been trained sufficiently to make the best use of mobility aids and equipment.
Accident and injuries can occur. And without following safe moving and handling techniques it’s easy to hurt yourself or someone you support, look after or care for.
The team at Side by Side Care complete essential training regularly. It usually involves practicing safe manoeuvres with other members of staff. This makes the training very real, as you are put in the position of a service user.
We also have a range of equipment to cover the many scenarios that we encounter when visiting the homes of the people we support around Crewe and Nantwich.
The right equipment, properly planned
The key goal for us is ensuring that our service users can live as independently as possible. As well as our experienced, well-trained staff, that means having the right equipment in place to support and promote independence in a safe environment.
With the appropriate fixtures and fittings a person can meet many if not all of their own personal hygiene needs. Crucially, well-planned equipment can give additional support for carers. That means fewer on-the-job injuries.
The needs of the user are met when required, and there is less need to react to situations that might have arisen because of inadequate facilities.
Side by Side Care staff have plenty of experience using bathroom equipment in a wide range of settings.
Whether that is grab rails, support arms by toilets or ceiling-mounted tracks and hoists for accessing showers and baths, having the right equipment in place can make a huge difference to safety and someone’s ability to live as independently as possible.
What care team is best for me?
There are so many things to consider when selecting the right care team to support you or a family member. There are many agencies around Crewe and Nantwich, but it’s important that you find the right one for you.
Everyone’s different, we all have different abilities and needs, so there can never be a one-cap-fits-all solution.
That’s why Side by Side Care likes to sit down, listen, chat, answer questions and then offer a care plan that we believe can meet all requirements.
It’s also essential that the whole family is involved, so everyone knows where they stand, what support is available, how they can help and who to contact when questions arise.
We hope that we cover all those things. We also stress the importance of up-to-date moving and handling training. We do this regularly with all carers at the Side by Side Care office in Nantwich.
You probably have many more questions. Why not give us a call and come and discuss what we have to offer.
